What to Expect at Your First Color Appointment With Us

Sitting in a new stylist's chair for color can feel like a leap of faith. You are trusting someone with the thing you see in the mirror every morning. I want your first visit to feel calm and clear instead, so here is exactly how it goes, from the day before to the week after.

01 Come in with your hair ready

Arrive with dry hair, ideally washed a day or two before, and skip heavy oils, dry shampoo, and styling cream that morning. Your scalp's natural oils help keep lightener more comfortable, and product buildup can affect how evenly color takes. Wear your hair the way you normally do so I can see your part, your texture, and how you actually style it.

02 Bring pictures, including the ones you do not like

Inspiration photos are the fastest way for us to get on the same page, because words like "warm," "ashy," and "subtle" mean something different to everyone. Save a few looks you love, and a few you would never want. The "no" pictures are often just as helpful as the "yes" ones.

03 Tell me your whole color history

Every appointment starts with a consultation, and this is the part that matters most. Be honest about box dye, henna, a keratin treatment, or a gloss from two years ago, even if you think it has grown out. Previous color and treatments can stay in the lengths for a long time and change how your hair lifts and holds tone. If you have ever had a scalp reaction to color, tell me before we start so we can talk about a patch test and plan around it.

04 Plan for real time in the chair

Blonding, balayage, and dimensional color take a while to do well. Depending on your hair and your goal, a first color visit can run a few hours, and a big change, like going from dark to bright blonde, is often done safely over more than one session. We map that journey together at the consultation, including pricing, so nothing surprises you. Bring a charger, a book, or just settle in.

The best color results start with honest conversation, not with the bowl and brush.

05 Protect it on the way home

Before you leave, I will walk you through your at-home routine. Most color benefits from waiting two to three days before the first wash, then switching to a sulfate-free, color-safe shampoo and using a heat protectant before hot tools. Blondes usually come back for a toner or gloss between lightening visits to keep tone fresh, and we will talk about the right timing for you. Our guide to protecting your color between visits covers the rest.

If you are curious about a specific service first, our balayage page and color correction page explain what each involves. Questions before you book? Send a DM to @jill_thestylist_. We are at 105 5th Street in Hoboken, Monday through Saturday, 9 to 6.
