5 Ways to Protect Your Color Between Visits

A beautiful color is really two jobs. Mine is the appointment. Yours is the six or eight weeks after it. The good news is that keeping blonde bright and lived-in color rich does not take much, just a few habits you can start today. Here are the five that make the biggest difference.

01 Wash a little less, and cooler

Every wash pulls a little tone and shine out of colored hair, and hot water opens the cuticle so it leaves faster. Stretching your washes to two or three times a week, and rinsing in cool to lukewarm water, is the single easiest way to make a color last. Your scalp balances out after a couple of weeks, and a good dry shampoo covers the in-between days.

02 Switch to color-safe, sulfate-free products

Harsh, sulfate-heavy shampoo strips tone fast. A gentle, sulfate-free, color-safe formula like Pureology Hydrate cleans without scrubbing your color down the drain. Check your conditioner and styling products too, and look for the words color-safe on the label.

03 Tone at home, with restraint

For the blondes, brass and yellow creep back in between visits. A purple or blue toning product once a week keeps things bright and cool. The trick is restraint. Leave it on for a few minutes, not the whole shower, or you can over-tone to a dull, flat violet that is harder to fix than the brass was.

04 Protect from heat every single time

Hot tools fade and dry color faster than almost anything. A good heat protectant before every blow-dry or iron is non-negotiable, and turning the temperature down a notch protects your investment without costing you the style. No protectant, no hot tool. It really is that simple.

05 Shield it from sun, chlorine, and hard water

Sun, salt, and chlorine are hard on color, especially blonde, which can pull green or brassy after a summer swim. Wet your hair with clean water and add a little conditioner before you get in a pool or the ocean, so it soaks up less of the bad stuff. A hat on long beach days helps, and if your home water is very hard, a simple shower filter can keep your tone from going dull over time.

Color does not fade all at once. It fades in small daily choices, which means you have real say in how long yours lasts.

None of this asks for a shelf full of products or an hour every morning. Pick one habit to start, add the next when it sticks, and your color will thank you with more time between visits and better shine while it lasts. That is a real win for your hair and your calendar.
